SHINE ON ME Egypt star left with bulging shiner under eye as he’s forced off after playing just 14 minutes of World Cup clash

EGYPT star Hossam Abdelmaguid was left with a bulging shiner during the World Cup clash with New Zealand.

The centre-back was caught by the elbow of Kiwi defender Michael Boxall in injury time. Abdelmaguid, 25, had only been on the pitch for 14 minutes as he came on as a late substitute for the northeast African nation.

But he was unable to see out the match after taking a hard blow from the Minnesota United star.

The Egyptian was treated by a medic on the pitch and was able to get up and leave the pitch on his own.

The Zamalek SC ace was not left unmarked as he could be seen with a huge swelling on his cheekbone.

He was unable to continue in the match on the advice of Fifa doctors.

This was done as the swelling had stopped him from being able to see properly.

Head coach Hossam Hassan was forced to replace him with Mohamed Abdelmonem.

The player change was made as a concussion substitution, as Egypt had already used all five of their allowed subs. The match ended in a historic 3-1 victory for the Pharaohs – their first ever win at a World Cup.

Finn Surman opened the scoring for New Zealand before Egypt staged a remarkable second-half turnaround.

Mostafa Ziko scored the equaliser before Mohamed Salah fired them ahead.

Former Aston Villa winger Trezeguet netted the third for Egypt to wrap up the result. There was some controversy surrounding the goal scored by Salah in the 68th minute.

The forward slotted past Max Crocombe while midfielder Ben Old was not allowed on the pitch until he changed his ripped shorts.

The Vancouver Stadium was sold out with overwhelming support for the Egyptian team.

After the game, Salah said: “In years to come we will remember that this was one of the achievements in history. “It feels like we are playing in Egypt. It’s a great win and great vibe.”

Hassan added: “I am very happy with this victory, and I thank the entire Egyptian people for their support.

“This victory is dedicated to all Egyptians, both men and women.

“I am extremely happy, and my feelings are similar to those of millions of Egyptians after this win.

“We were successful in the match and put in a great effort, especially after the first half, which we ended with a goal against us.
