Sara Foster has opened up about her father David Foster’s marriage to Katharine McPhee, making it clear that she fully supports their relationship despite the couple’s 35-year age gap. Although their marriage has frequently been the subject of public scrutiny, Sara believes the only thing that truly matters is that they are genuinely happy together.

Appearing on Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, Sara Foster was asked about her relationship with Katharine McPhee. Without hesitation, she praised her stepmother and spoke warmly about the bond they share.
“She’s really amazing.”
Sara went on to explain that becoming part of the Foster family is far from easy, especially given the family’s public profile and the constant media attention surrounding them.
“I have to tell you, she really is,” Sara continued, adding that Katharine has blended into the family in a thoughtful and respectful way.
According to Sara, David Foster and Katharine McPhee have endured years of criticism over their 35-year age difference, with David now 76 years old and Katharine 42.
“They’ve gotten so much s— about their age difference. Everyone has an opinion about something. And you know what? They’re like 12 years in, and they are happy.”

David Foster first met Katharine McPhee in 2006 during American Idol, where she competed as a contestant while he appeared as a guest mentor. More than a decade later, rumors of a romance emerged in 2017 before the couple officially confirmed their relationship by making their red carpet debut at the 2018 Met Gala.
During the interview, Sara also defended Katharine against criticism surrounding the age gap.
“She is a fully consenting lady. This is not like some child bride. She is in her 40s.”
Speaking about Katharine’s place within the family, Sara acknowledged that being a stepparent is never an easy role to navigate.
“I think you want to ride the line of wanting your partner’s kids to like you and wanting to show up as a motherly figure. But you also have to have respect for the biological mom. I think it’s a tough balance, and I think she does it really well.”
When host Kristin Cavallari jokingly asked whether Katharine could ever “mother” her, Sara laughed and reminded everyone that she is actually older than her stepmother.
“I am older than her.”
Sara added, “I look at her as a sister, but like she is my stepmom. She’s my dad’s wife. So, I think it’s normal for her to come in and kind of take over in certain situations, and she really doesn’t do that.”
Over the weekend, Katharine McPhee celebrated seven years of marriage with David Foster by sharing photos and videos from their 2019 wedding ceremony at the Church of Saint Yeghiche in London on her Instagram Stories, marking another milestone in their relationship.
