NRL Late Mail: Benji Eyes Debut Gamble, Origin Stars Face Fitness Race Ahead of Round

The aftermath of the State of Origin decider continues to shape Round action, with several clubs sweating on the availability of key players while others prepare to unveil fresh talent.

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall is reportedly considering a late change that could hand highly rated youngster Jared Haywood his long-awaited NRL debut. Originally naming Josese Lanyon at hooker to replace the injured Api Koroisau, Marshall is now weighing whether Haywood is ready to take on the role after impressing behind the scenes.

The Tigers also receive a timely boost with Samuela Fainu returning from a foot injury, while the Warriors will be without Origin representatives Mitchell Barnett and Kurt Capewell. However, James Fisher-Harris and rising star Leka Halasima are expected to make successful returns after recovering from calf and hamstring injuries.

The Sydney Roosters have suffered a major setback after captain James Tedesco was ruled out following his concussion in the Origin decider. Coach Trent Robinson confirmed the fullback will miss at least two games, while Reece Robson and Sam Walker will also be rested as planned. Cody Ramsey is tipped to replace Tedesco at the back.

North Queensland received encouraging news regarding star halfback Tom Dearden, who is closing in on his comeback from an ankle injury. Coach Todd Payten said Dearden has responded well and will undergo final fitness tests before a decision is made. Payten also expects the Cowboys' Origin stars to back up despite Wednesday night's exhausting clash.

Manly are confident both Haumole Olakau'atu and Tolu Koula will be available after limited Origin minutes, while Newcastle confirmed representative prop Jacob Saifiti faces six to eight weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Elsewhere, Melbourne and Gold Coast are expected to field near full-strength line-ups, with final late-mail updates to come before kick-off.

With Origin now over, attention shifts back to the NRL—and team lists remain anything but settled as clubs balance fatigue, injuries and crucial late selection calls.
