Nicki Minaj’s Former Friend Rah Ali Accuses Her of Trying to Control Her

Rah Ali has spoken publicly about the breakdown of her once-close friendship with Nicki Minaj. In a lengthy Instagram video, Ali said she no longer wanted to stay silent about what she described as efforts to damage her reputation and her life. These are Ali’s allegations; she has not publicly provided evidence that Minaj deliberately tried to harm her. Minaj has not publicly responded to the specific claims.

Ali described their friendship as a relationship that lasted for years, during which she said she had remained loyal, honest and trustworthy. “Nicki Minaj and I were friends for well over a decade. We met around 2016, and in that time frame, I have been loyal, I have been honest, I have been trustworthy. I have not done anything at all to her,” Ali said in the video. Her timeline is somewhat inconsistent: she described the friendship as lasting well over a decade while also saying they met around 2016.

Ali went on to say she had reached her breaking point. “There comes a point where you have to say enough is enough,” she explained. She then accused Minaj of trying to “destroy” her because she would not let anyone act as a “puppet master.” The phrase became a focal point of Ali’s account, but it remains her interpretation of the conflict between them, not an independently verified conclusion.

As Ali tells it, the problem was not simply that the friendship ended. She said she felt controlled and placed at a disadvantage when she stopped meeting her former friend’s expectations. Ali said she had spent years protecting the relationship, but no longer wanted to keep quiet if doing so meant accepting harm to herself. She has not, however, publicly provided evidence that Minaj deliberately tried to ruin her life or reputation.

Speculation about the rift had circulated before Ali spoke out. Their relationship was said to have turned tense after Minaj posted on social media in October 2025 that three different people had made unauthorized charges to her American Express card over a period of two months. Minaj did not name Rah Ali in those posts. Her comments therefore do not establish that Ali was among the people she was referring to. Minaj’s posts were reported at the time as allegations about unauthorized charges.

A few weeks later, Ali published an open letter addressed to Minaj. In it, she accused her former friend of allowing others to spread damaging claims about her. “You’ve empowered and given license to others to spread deplorable lies about me, smearing my character and throwing away the friendship,” Ali wrote. She said it was painful enough to be targeted by people she did not know, but more hurtful when the claims came from someone she had trusted.

Ali also challenged Minaj to provide evidence or apologize instead of allowing the rumors to be amplified. “If any of these allegations were true, we’d be having a very different conversation, wouldn’t we? Show the evidence or apologize instead of sensationalizing headlines,” she wrote. Her comments made clear that she denied the claims being made about her. However, the post did not specify each allegation or provide documents that would allow them to be independently assessed.

The falling-out marks a sharp turn in a friendship that had once appeared close. Ali had often supported Minaj during public disputes, most notably her long-running feud with Cardi B. That support led many to view Ali as one of Minaj’s closest allies in the rapper’s public conflicts. Her decision to speak out now stands in marked contrast to her earlier image as someone who regularly appeared by Minaj’s side during tense moments.

Rah Ali also had a history of conflict with Cardi B, including an altercation at New York Fashion Week in 2018. It took place at an event attended by both Minaj and Cardi B, after months of tension between the two rappers. Minaj later discussed the incident on her radio show, claiming that Ali had struck Cardi B. Accounts of the altercation have varied, so individual retellings online should not be treated as a complete record of what happened. Still, Ali’s association with Minaj made her a recognizable figure in the rappers’ ongoing dispute.

The feud between Minaj and Cardi B has long drawn considerable attention from rap fans. The artists traded responses through music and social media, and people close to them were sometimes pulled into the conflict. Ali became linked to the story because she openly supported Minaj and had clashed with Cardi. Now that her friendship with Minaj has ended, that history has fueled public curiosity about the cause, although the earlier disputes do not prove anything about Ali’s latest allegations.

For Nicki Minaj, personal and professional conflicts have often attracted attention alongside her music. Born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago, she moved to New York as a child and built a reputation for her flexible rap style, shifting vocal personas and striking stage presence. Early mixtapes helped her develop a following before she signed with Young Money Entertainment and entered the mainstream. The Recording Academy’s profile lists Minaj’s awards and nominations.

Her 2010 debut album, Pink Friday, established Minaj as a leading figure in a new generation of women in rap. Songs such as “Super Bass,” “Starships” and “Anaconda” helped her reach audiences well beyond hip-hop. She became known for switching between distinct rap voices, creating different musical personas and delivering memorable hooks. Her commercial success has sustained a career spanning more than a decade, during which she has released albums, toured, appeared on television and collaborated with a wide range of artists.

That career has also included public disputes. Minaj has traded musical responses with other rappers, including Remy Ma. In 2017, after Remy Ma released a diss track, Minaj responded with “No Frauds,” along with other songs. Such rivalries are familiar in rap culture, but when they spill onto social media, fans and people close to the artists can become involved as well. Minaj and Remy Ma’s feud continued through a series of diss tracks.

Minaj married Kenneth Petty in 2019. They have a son, and the rapper generally keeps much of her family life private. Her marriage has also drawn criticism, particularly because of Petty’s past legal record. Minaj has publicly defended her husband in response to that criticism. This part of her personal life is not directly related to Ali’s allegations, but it helps explain why Minaj’s private choices often become subjects of wider debate.

As for the current dispute, what is publicly established is that Ali says their friendship has ended, denies the claims being made about her and accuses Minaj of trying to control and harm her. Ali has not publicly provided evidence to substantiate the “puppet master” allegation, and Minaj has not directly responded to those comments. Minaj’s earlier posts about unauthorized charges did not name Ali, so it would be inaccurate to claim that Ali was one of the people she mentioned.

Given how close the two women once appeared and their shared history around major rap disputes, Ali’s comments have left fans wondering what happened behind the scenes. For now, however, much of the information about the falling-out comes from Ali’s account and social media posts. There is no public basis for treating her allegations as established fact, and Minaj has yet to offer her side of the story.

Ali says she will no longer protect the friendship at the expense of her own peace. “I’m not gonna sit back and allow someone to intentionally try to destroy me, simply because I won’t allow them to be a puppet master,” she said. For Minaj, the latest dispute adds to a series of conflicts that often surround her public life. For Ali, it is her explanation for why she no longer stands beside her former friend. The full reason for their falling-out remains unconfirmed by both sides.
