Mbappé Thriving for France While Real Madrid Questions Continue to Grow

France's captain is dominating the World Cup—but his club career tells a very different story

Kylian Mbappé has once again become the face of the FIFA World Cup.

Heading into France's blockbuster semi-final against Spain, the 27-year-old sits alongside Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament's scoring charts with eight goals, delivering another breathtaking international campaign as Les Bleus chase a third world title.

Yet behind his spectacular performances lies one of football's biggest contradictions.

While Mbappé continues to inspire France on the world's biggest stage, questions about his future influence at Real Madrid have only intensified after another frustrating season in Spain.

World Cup Mbappé looks unstoppable

Few players elevate their game on football's biggest stage quite like Mbappé.

Ever since bursting onto the scene during France's triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign, the forward has consistently delivered when his country has needed him most.

This tournament has been no different.

His eight goals have propelled France into the semi-finals, where Didier Deschamps' side will attempt to overcome Spain for a place in another World Cup final.

His speed, finishing and leadership have once again reminded the football world why he remains one of the sport's defining superstars.

Club success still refuses to follow

Ironically, Mbappé's international brilliance comes immediately after another disappointing campaign with Real Madrid.

Despite joining the Spanish giants in 2024 with hopes of dominating European football, Madrid have now completed two consecutive seasons without winning a major trophy.

The club suffered an early Champions League exit against Bayern Munich before losing the La Liga title race to Barcelona, leaving supporters frustrated despite Mbappé's remarkable individual numbers.

The French striker scored 42 goals in just 44 appearances, including 25 league goals to secure a second consecutive Pichichi Trophy as La Liga's top scorer.

But at Real Madrid, statistics rarely outweigh silverware.

Fans have turned against their superstar

Perhaps the biggest surprise of Mbappé's Madrid career has been the growing tension with the club's supporters.

Towards the end of the season, sections of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd booed the French captain, while an online petition calling for his departure reportedly attracted more than 70 million signatures.

Mbappé accepted the criticism with remarkable calm.

"It's life," he said.
"You can't change people's minds when they're angry. I shouldn't take it personally."

Many supporters have questioned whether Mbappé displays the same passion for Real Madrid that he consistently shows while wearing the French jersey.

One Madrid fan summed up the frustration by saying the club expects him "to show more character, like what he demonstrates with his national team."

A difficult season filled with controversy

Results were not the only source of tension.

Mbappé also found himself involved in several high-profile controversies throughout the campaign.

In May, he publicly questioned then-manager Álvaro Arbeloa after being left out of the starting lineup following his return from a hamstring injury.

Mbappé claimed he had been told he was only the club's fourth-choice forward, a statement Arbeloa immediately denied.

Earlier in the year, reports also suggested disagreements between Mbappé's camp and Real Madrid's medical staff regarding the treatment of a persistent knee problem.

Although the French star rejected suggestions that the injury had been misdiagnosed, the speculation added to an already turbulent season.

Mourinho begins a new era

Determined to recover from another disappointing campaign, Real Madrid have once again turned to José Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager has already made light-hearted comments about hoping his players return from the World Cup as quickly as possible.

But when speaking specifically about Mbappé, Mourinho offered nothing but admiration.

"He's a phenomenal player, and I'm going to try to help him become even better than he already is."

His arrival represents another opportunity for both player and club to reset after two frustrating years together.

Can Mbappé bring his World Cup magic back to Madrid?

For now, Mbappé's full focus remains on leading France toward another World Cup trophy.

Every goal he scores strengthens his reputation as one of the greatest international performers of his generation.

Yet once the tournament ends, attention will immediately shift back to Madrid, where expectations remain unforgiving.

If Mbappé can reproduce his World Cup brilliance in a Real Madrid shirt, much of the criticism surrounding him may quickly disappear.

Until then, football's greatest paradox remains intact: unstoppable for France, yet still searching for complete acceptance at the world's biggest club.
