Manchester United Agree £50m Deal for Chelsea Midfielder Andrey Santos

United secure one of the summer's biggest transfers

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal worth £50 million, according to reports.

The transfer includes a guaranteed £48 million payment, with a further £2 million in performance-related add-ons. Chelsea have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause, ensuring they will benefit financially from any future transfer involving the 22-year-old.

Santos is now expected to undergo a medical before officially completing his move to Old Trafford.

Chelsea cash in despite Santos' promising campaign

The Brazilian international arrived at Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 and was widely regarded as one of South America's brightest young midfielders.

After loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg, Santos finally established himself in Chelsea's first team last season, making 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Despite his progress, Chelsea have decided to sanction his departure as they continue reshaping their squad under a long-term rebuilding strategy.

Limited opportunities influenced the decision

One of the major factors behind Santos' exit appears to be concerns over playing time.

Chelsea will not compete in European competition next season, reducing the number of matches available for squad rotation. In addition, the club recently tied Moisés Caicedo to a new long-term contract running until 2033, making Santos' path to becoming a regular starter increasingly difficult.

The Brazilian reportedly believes a move to Manchester United offers a better opportunity to establish himself as one of the Premier League's leading midfielders.

Michael Carrick continues rebuilding United

The signing represents another significant statement from Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, who has made strengthening the midfield his top priority this summer.

United have already lost veteran midfielder Casemiro, whose contract expired, while Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious injury during the FIFA World Cup.

Santos is viewed as a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder capable of contributing both defensively and offensively, making him an ideal fit for Carrick's evolving system.

Ederson could be next through the door

Manchester United's business may not stop with Santos.

The club are also closing in on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, another Brazilian international who has impressed in Serie A. Should both transfers be completed, United's midfield could undergo one of its biggest transformations in recent years.

The arrivals would significantly improve the squad's depth while lowering the average age of the midfield.

More transfer targets remain on United's list

United continue to pursue reinforcements in other areas of the pitch.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville remains the club's primary target for the left wing, although negotiations are still at an early stage. The Red Devils hope to finance part of that move through the possible sale of Marcus Rashford, whose future remains uncertain after returning from his post-World Cup break.

Meanwhile, interest in Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall has temporarily been placed on hold until midfield recruitment is completed.

Chelsea continue reshaping their squad

While Santos prepares to leave, Chelsea remain active in the transfer market.

The Blues have officially completed the signing of highly rated Portuguese youngster Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in a deal worth around £40 million. The 18-year-old has signed an eight-year contract after recovering from a foot injury that interrupted part of last season.

Chelsea's willingness to sell Santos while investing in younger attacking talent reflects the club's ongoing strategy of restructuring its squad for the future.

A move that could define Santos' career

For Andrey Santos, the transfer to Manchester United represents the biggest challenge of his professional career so far.

Although he showed flashes of his immense potential at Chelsea, regular opportunities were never guaranteed. At Old Trafford, expectations will be considerably higher, with supporters hoping the Brazilian can become the long-term midfield leader the club has been searching for.

If the medical proceeds without complications, Santos is expected to become one of Manchester United's marquee signings of the 2026 summer transfer window.
