Lewis Hamilton Fires Warning to Mercedes as Ferrari Stays in Formula 1 Title Fight

Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes should already be out of sight in both Formula 1 championship battles—but insists Ferrari's consistency has kept the fight alive as the second half of the season approaches.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has admitted he is surprised to still be firmly in contention for the 2026 Drivers' Championship despite Ferrari rarely matching Mercedes for outright pace.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Hamilton suggested Mercedes have failed to fully capitalize on having what he considers the fastest car on the grid.

Hamilton questions Mercedes' advantage

Mercedes rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli currently leads the Drivers' Championship, holding a 25-point advantage over teammate George Russell.

Hamilton sits just 32 points behind Antonelli and only seven points behind his former teammate Russell, leaving the title battle remarkably close as the season approaches its halfway point.

For Hamilton, those margins do not reflect the true competitive picture.

"It's great that we're all close when really Mercedes have been the strongest team," Hamilton said.

"They should be a lot further ahead."

His comments underline Ferrari's ability to remain competitive despite lacking the outright speed that has often made Mercedes the benchmark throughout the campaign.

Ferrari benefiting from consistency and reliability

While Mercedes have collected several victories this season, reliability problems have repeatedly cost them valuable championship points.

Both Antonelli and Russell have failed to score in two Grands Prix each, allowing Ferrari to steadily reduce the gap.

Hamilton, by contrast, has enjoyed one of the most consistent seasons on the grid.

The British driver has yet to finish outside the top six in any Grand Prix this year and has claimed four podium finishes in his last five races, including his emotional first victory for Ferrari at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

That consistency has also kept Ferrari within striking distance in the Constructors' Championship, where Mercedes currently lead by 78 points.

Reliability could decide the championship

Hamilton believes Ferrari's dependable package could become one of the team's biggest advantages during the remainder of the season.

"I hope so," he said when asked whether reliability could prove decisive.

"Often in championships, that is the case."

The Ferrari driver praised the engineers at Maranello for producing a car capable of finishing races week after week.

"That's really down to the amazing work the team's done in building us a reliable car."

"It's no easy feat to build a fast and reliable car, so I'm very grateful to them."

Hamilton added that his focus remains on extracting every possible point from every race weekend.

"I'm just trying my best to extract everything in every single lap and every single point I can out of the car."

Hamilton refuses to obsess over standings

Despite remaining firmly in the championship hunt, Hamilton insists he is not paying close attention to the standings.

"I don't really look at it much," he admitted.

"I don't think about it. I don't think it's particularly relevant."

Instead, the Ferrari star prefers to focus on maximizing each race rather than calculating championship scenarios.

With several races still remaining before the title fight reaches its climax, Hamilton believes anything can happen.

Emotional after England's World Cup heartbreak

Hamilton also spoke about England's painful World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, revealing he watched the match hoping Gareth Southgate's side could reach another final.

"I watched in pain last night," he admitted.

"So proud of the boys for getting us as far as they did."

"I just felt gutted for them."

Hamilton praised the commitment shown by the England squad throughout the tournament and said the country would recover from the disappointment.

"They had all the support. It was tough against Argentina, but we'll bounce back."

Spa offers another chance

Attention now turns back to Formula 1, where Hamilton hopes Ferrari can continue building momentum at one of the sport's most iconic circuits.

Although cautious about Ferrari's chances against Mercedes this weekend, the 41-year-old made his objective perfectly clear.

"I really have no idea how we'll be this weekend," Hamilton admitted.

"But I come here to try and win—that's for sure."

With Ferrari enjoying excellent reliability and Hamilton producing one of his most consistent seasons in years, the championship battle remains far from over despite Mercedes' apparent pace advantage.

And if Ferrari can continue converting consistency into points, Hamilton's eighth world title may still be within reach.
