Jacob Bethell Promoted to Open as England Name ODI Team for India Series Opener

England have handed Jacob Bethell a major opportunity at the top of the order after naming him as Ben Duckett's opening partner for the first One-Day International against India at Edgbaston.

The series opener marks the beginning of England's preparations for the 2027 Cricket World Cup and follows an impressive 4-0 T20I series victory over India that lifted the hosts to No. 1 in the world T20 rankings.

With a fresh batting combination and several experienced stars returning, England hope to carry their momentum into the 50-over format.

Bethell Earns His Chance at the Top

Jacob Bethell will open an ODI for England alongside Ben Duckett for the first time, replacing Phil Salt at the top of the batting order.

The 22-year-old has impressed in white-ball cricket and now receives the role he has long preferred.

According to former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who worked closely with Bethell during the Indian Premier League with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, opening the batting is exactly where the young left-hander wants to play.

"Bethell genuinely wants to be at the top of the innings," Karthik said.

"In white-ball cricket he prefers opening. This is his opportunity, and I think he'll enjoy batting there."

Root Returns as England Refresh the Line-up

England have made only two changes from the side that dominated the recent T20 series.

Joe Root returns to strengthen the middle order in place of Tom Banton, while Ben Duckett replaces Phil Salt.

Harry Brook will continue as captain, with Jos Buttler keeping wicket in what will be a significant personal milestone.

England XI vs India

  • Jacob Bethell

  • Ben Duckett

  • Joe Root

  • Harry Brook (captain)

  • Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper)

  • Sam Curran

  • Will Jacks

  • Jofra Archer

  • Liam Dawson

  • Josh Tongue

  • Adil Rashid

The bowling attack combines pace and spin, with Archer and Tongue leading the fast-bowling unit while Rashid, Dawson and Jacks provide multiple spin options.

A Landmark Day for Jos Buttler

Tuesday's match will be Jos Buttler's 200th appearance in One-Day Internationals for England.

The experienced wicketkeeper-batter remains one of England's most dangerous white-ball players and recently reminded everyone of his class by producing a career-best ODI score of 131.

His experience will be invaluable as England attempt to improve their fortunes in the 50-over game.

Can England Translate T20 Success into ODIs?

Despite dominating India in the T20 series, England currently sit only eighth in the ICC ODI rankings, with India occupying the top spot.

Karthik believes the biggest challenge is adapting mentally between the two formats.

He explained that T20 specialists often struggle with the slower middle phase of an ODI innings, where patience and strike rotation become just as important as boundary hitting.

"The attention span is different," Karthik said.

"Between overs 11 and 40, players need to manage the game rather than attack every ball, and that's an adjustment some T20 players still find difficult."

McCullum Begins a New Chapter

The ODI series also marks Brendon McCullum's first assignment focusing exclusively on England's white-ball teams after being removed as Test head coach.

The New Zealander admitted he was disappointed by his departure but insisted his full attention is now on leading England back to success in limited-overs cricket.

"It's a results business," McCullum said.

"I'll wear the disappointment, but I'm excited about the opportunity ahead. The goal is simple—we want to win trophies."

With the 2027 Cricket World Cup on the horizon, every ODI now becomes an important step in building England's strongest possible squad.

India Provide the Perfect Test

Although England enter the series full of confidence after their T20 success, facing the world's top-ranked ODI side represents a much tougher examination.

India possess one of the deepest squads in international cricket, making this three-match series an ideal opportunity for England to measure their progress.

For Jacob Bethell, however, the spotlight will be firmly on his first outing as an ODI opener.

A strong performance at Edgbaston could cement his place at the top of England's batting order for years to come.
