George Russell Refuses to Give Up on 2026 F1 Title Despite Mercedes Setbacks

George Russell has vowed to keep fighting for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship despite suffering another major setback at the Belgian Grand Prix, where a frustrating retirement saw him lose significant ground in the title race.

The Mercedes driver entered the Spa-Francorchamps weekend hoping to continue closing the gap to championship leader and teammate Kimi Antonelli. Instead, his race ended after just five corners following a collision with Lewis Hamilton, leaving him 50 points behind Antonelli in the standings.

Russell: "Knocked Down, We Get Back Up"

Despite the disappointment, Russell remains determined not to let the latest setback derail his championship ambitions.

Taking to social media after the race, the British driver sent a defiant message to fans.

"Knocked down, we get back up. No matter how many times. So many tough moments this year, but I will not stop fighting."

Russell had already battled through several difficult weekends this season, including reliability issues that have repeatedly compromised his results. While he briefly reduced Antonelli's championship lead over recent races, Spa proved to be another costly blow.

Mystery Power Problems Continue to Haunt Mercedes

Team principal Toto Wolff admitted Mercedes is still searching for answers after Russell experienced unexplained power deployment problems throughout the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.

According to Wolff, engineers identified an issue affecting the deployment of electrical energy on Russell's car, particularly during the final sector of the Spa circuit. The problem reduced his straight-line speed and left him vulnerable throughout the weekend.

Mercedes also revealed that all of its customer-powered cars experienced a separate boost issue at the race start, although Russell's car appeared to be affected more severely than teammate Antonelli's.

The lack of acceleration allowed rival drivers to overtake him on the opening lap before contact with Hamilton ended his race almost immediately.

Wolff Backs Russell

Although Russell admitted he has become "numb" to the repeated technical disappointments this season, Wolff insisted the team would do everything possible to restore the driver's confidence.

The Mercedes boss emphasized that the responsibility lies with the team as much as the driver.

"We have a championship-winning chassis and power unit, but we still need to solve these reliability issues," Wolff explained.

He also stressed that Russell remains a key part of Mercedes' long-term plans and promised the team would work to "recreate optimism and positivity" ahead of the next race.

Focus Shifts to the Hungarian Grand Prix

With the Hungarian Grand Prix just days away, Mercedes engineers face an urgent task to identify the root cause of Russell's performance deficit.

Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok believes Russell needs clear technical answers before returning to the cockpit.

"If you're arriving at a race weekend without confidence in your car, you're fighting with one hand tied behind your back," Chandhok said.

Mercedes may even consider changing Russell's power unit if necessary, despite the potential grid penalties, in order to eliminate any lingering reliability concerns.

Championship Fight Still Alive

While the gap to Antonelli has grown considerably after Spa, Russell insists his title challenge is far from over.

With several races still remaining in the 2026 season, the 28-year-old is determined to keep fighting, hoping Mercedes can finally solve the technical issues that have repeatedly prevented him from showing his full pace.

The Hungarian Grand Prix now represents a crucial opportunity for both Russell and Mercedes to get their championship campaign back on track before the title race slips further out of reach.
