England on the brink of crushing defeat as India dominate Lord’s Test, ending Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont’s careers in heartbreak

England are staring at a heavy defeat in the historic Women’s Test at Lord’s after India tightened their grip on the match with a commanding all-round performance, leaving the hosts needing an almost impossible world-record chase of 457 runs.

At stumps on Day 3, England had slumped to 130/6, still 327 runs away from victory, with only four wickets remaining. Barring a miracle, India are set to wrap up the contest on Monday and secure a famous Test victory in London.

India seize complete control

Resuming their second innings in a strong position, India continued to pile on the runs before captain Harmanpreet Kaur declared at 341/7.

The innings was highlighted by a magnificent century from Yastika Bhatia, who became the first woman in history to score a Test hundred at Lord’s. Her superb 113 was supported by Smriti Mandhana’s fluent 70 and an unbeaten half-century from Richa Ghosh, allowing India to set England a daunting target of 457—the highest successful chase would be by far in women’s Test cricket.

Despite Sophie Ecclestone claiming another outstanding five-wicket haul, England never looked capable of slowing India's momentum.

England collapse under pressure

The chase quickly turned into a nightmare.

England crashed to 59/5 inside the opening 20 overs as India’s pace attack tore through the top order.

Kranti Gaud struck immediately by dismissing Tammy Beaumont with the very first ball she faced, ending the veteran opener’s international career with a heartbreaking golden duck.

Moments later, former captain Heather Knight managed only 13 before falling to the same bowler, bringing an emotional end to another remarkable England career.

Both Beaumont and Knight received touching guards of honour from the Indian players as they left the field for the final time in international cricket.

Amy Jones fights a lonely battle

With wickets falling regularly, Amy Jones once again showed her class, remaining unbeaten on 52 after also scoring a half-century in England’s first innings.

She shared a determined 67-run partnership with Mady Villiers, briefly frustrating India before Villiers was brilliantly caught by Richa Ghosh late in the day.

However, Jones' resistance is unlikely to be enough to prevent defeat.

Historic records continue to fall

The Lord’s Test has already produced several historic milestones.

Yastika Bhatia became the first woman to score a Test century at the iconic venue, while Kranti Gaud entered the Lord’s honours board with her first-innings five-wicket haul.

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone also etched her name into the history books, claiming another five-for while becoming England’s all-time leading wicket-taker across all formats with 343 international wickets.

Emotional farewells overshadowed

The match was expected to celebrate the careers of Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight, but both legends endured disappointing final innings.

Beaumont had announced before the Test that she would retire from international cricket after the match, while Knight confirmed during the game that this would also be her final appearance for England.

Instead of a fairy-tale ending, both left the field early as India’s relentless attack spoiled the occasion.

India one step away from another famous victory

India now require just four more wickets to complete another dominant Test triumph over England, having also defeated them convincingly in Navi Mumbai in 2023.

Unless England produce one of the greatest escapes in cricket history, Day 4 at Lord’s is expected to belong to India, who are poised to complete one of the finest overseas victories in the history of women’s Test cricket.
