England Hit by Quansah Suspension as FIFA Hands Defender Two-Match Ban

England have suffered a significant setback ahead of their FIFA World Cup quarter-final after defender Jarell Quansah was handed a two-match suspension following his red card against Mexico.
The 23-year-old will miss Saturday's quarter-final clash with Norway and would also be unavailable for a potential semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland if England progress.

FIFA Extends Suspension
Quansah was dismissed during England's dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 after a VAR review upgraded his challenge on Jesus Gallardo from no foul to a straight red card.
Initially overlooked by referee Alireza Faghani, the incident was reassessed after video review, with Quansah judged to have endangered the safety of his opponent despite making contact with the ball first.
Following a disciplinary review, FIFA ruled that the challenge constituted serious foul play under Article 14 of its disciplinary code, automatically triggering a two-match suspension.
The Football Association has no right of appeal under FIFA's World Cup regulations, meaning the ban is final.
Tuchel Frustrated by VAR Process
England manager Thomas Tuchel is understood to be deeply frustrated by both the decision and the review process itself.
According to reports, Tuchel believed referee Faghani was shown only a freeze-frame of Quansah's studs making contact with Gallardo's shin, rather than the full-speed sequence that showed the Liverpool defender winning the ball before the collision.
Although IFAB's Laws of the Game state that playing the ball does not excuse a challenge that seriously endangers an opponent, Tuchel reportedly felt the referee was not presented with enough context before making his decision.
Despite the FA formally expressing its concerns to FIFA, the disciplinary committee upheld the dismissal and increased the punishment beyond the standard one-match suspension.
Defensive Headache for England

Quansah's suspension leaves England with limited options at right-back ahead of their meeting with Norway.
Reece James remains unavailable as he continues recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the group stage, while Djed Spence has only recently returned from injury and is still working his way back to full fitness.
The situation could force Tuchel into a tactical reshuffle, with versatile defender Ezri Konsa emerging as the leading candidate to fill the role despite being one of England's first-choice centre-backs throughout the tournament.
Such a move would create another dilemma, as England could lose one of their strongest central defenders ahead of a potential battle with Norway striker Erling Haaland.
Pundits Back the Decision
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes FIFA made the correct call.
Gallagher argued that Quansah's challenge, while touching the ball, was high and dangerous, with his studs striking Gallardo midway up the shin.
"The referee missed it initially, but once VAR recommended the review, a red card was the right outcome," Gallagher said.
Norway Test Looms
England now enter one of their biggest matches of the tournament without one of their defensive options and with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of several full-backs.
Thomas Tuchel must now find a solution before Saturday's quarter-final, knowing that victory would keep England's dream of reaching the World Cup final alive.
