Tuchel confirms his future despite painful defeat
Thomas Tuchel has pledged to remain as England head coach until the end of his contract at Euro 2028, despite the Three Lions suffering a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
England looked destined for their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon fired them into the lead in Atlanta. However, the defending champions produced another remarkable comeback, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scoring twice within seven minutes to send Argentina into the final and leave England devastated.

Despite the disappointment, Tuchel made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down.
"We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros," Tuchel said. "I'm looking forward to that, even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead."
Having extended his contract earlier this year, the German coach is now focused on building a squad capable of challenging for the European Championship in 2028, which will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
England determined to respond
England will remain in the United States for the third-place play-off against France, a match neither side had hoped to contest.
Tuchel admitted the fixture is emotionally difficult but insisted his players must respond professionally.
"We have to bounce back and react. That's what you have to do at the highest level of sport," he explained.
Although elimination is painful, Tuchel reminded critics that reaching the semi-finals remains a significant achievement, with many traditional football powers failing to make it that far.
Harry Kane rues missed opportunity

Captain Harry Kane admitted England became too defensive after taking the lead, allowing Argentina to build momentum.
"We're gutted," Kane said. "Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just try and hold on, and at this level that's not enough."
According to Kane, the coaching staff encouraged the team to continue attacking after Gordon's goal, but Argentina's relentless pressure gradually pushed England deeper into their own half.
"It was wave after wave. We blocked shots, defended with everything we had, but in the end it wasn't enough."
A promising future despite the disappointment
Although England fell short once again, there are positives to take from the tournament. The Three Lions reached another World Cup semi-final, demonstrating resilience, defensive organisation and the emergence of several young stars.
With Tuchel remaining in charge and a home European Championship only two years away, England will hope the painful lessons from Atlanta can become the foundation for future success.
For now, however, the focus shifts to finishing the World Cup on a positive note before beginning preparations for what could be one of the most important tournaments in the nation's history.
