England 1-2 Argentina: Holders Complete Stunning Comeback to Reach World Cup Final

England's dream ends in heartbreaking fashion

England's hopes of reaching their first FIFA World Cup final since 1966 were shattered after Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to claim a 2-1 victory in Atlanta and book their place in the 2026 World Cup final.

The Three Lions looked destined for a famous win after Anthony Gordon fired them ahead early in the second half. However, the defending champions turned the match on its head in the closing minutes, with Enzo Fernández equalising in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner in stoppage time.

Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday's World Cup final, while England must regroup for the third-place play-off against France.

Late tactical shift proves costly

England had controlled large spells of the match and deservedly took the lead when Gordon converted Morgan Rogers' excellent cross in the 55th minute.

But the momentum shifted dramatically after head coach Thomas Tuchel introduced several defensive substitutions and switched to a back five in an attempt to protect the advantage.

The tactical adjustment handed possession and territory to Argentina, who relentlessly pushed forward. Lionel Messi became increasingly influential, creating both goals with moments of brilliance. Fernández levelled with a stunning strike from outside the box before Messi delivered a perfect cross for Martínez to head home the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

After the match, Tuchel admitted his side became "too passive" but insisted he had no regrets over his decisions.

Kane admits England invited pressure

Captain Harry Kane was visibly devastated after the final whistle and admitted England failed to maintain their attacking approach after taking the lead.

"Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try and hold on. At this level, that's not enough," Kane said.

England's inability to relieve pressure proved decisive as Argentina dominated the closing stages. Statistics reflected the shift, with England seeing very little possession after Gordon's goal and struggling to create another meaningful attacking opportunity.

Messi leads Argentina one step from history

Once again, Lionel Messi delivered when his country needed him most.

Although he did not score, the Argentine captain produced two decisive assists and controlled the tempo during the closing stages as the reigning champions completed another memorable comeback.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni praised the character of his squad after reaching a second consecutive World Cup final.

"We're unique. It's not arrogance—it's heart. These players never stop fighting," Scaloni said.

Argentina are now just one victory away from becoming the first nation since Brazil (1958 and 1962) to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.

England must regroup for Euro 2028

Despite another painful semi-final exit, England can still take positives from an impressive tournament under Thomas Tuchel.

The German coach has already confirmed he will remain in charge through Euro 2028, believing this young squad can continue to grow despite the disappointment in Atlanta.

For England, the immediate challenge is finishing the tournament strongly against France. For Argentina, the dream of retaining the World Cup remains very much alive as they prepare for a blockbuster final against Spain.
