World Cup 2026: Egypt Furious Over ‘Unfair’ Refereeing After Dramatic Defeat to Argentina

Egypt Question Key Decisions Following Heartbreaking Exit

Egypt's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 has sparked major controversy, with head coach Hossam Hassan accusing the match officials of unfair refereeing after his side surrendered a two-goal lead.

The Pharaohs looked on course for one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before Argentina produced a stunning comeback. However, much of the post-match discussion has centered on several contentious refereeing decisions that Egypt believes changed the outcome of the game.

Penalty Appeals and Disallowed Goal Fuel Frustration

Egypt's complaints focus on several crucial incidents during the second half. The most controversial came when forward Mohamed Salah appeared to be caught inside the penalty area by Julián Álvarez, with Egyptian players insisting a penalty should have been awarded or, at the very least, reviewed by VAR.

Shortly before Argentina's winning goal, another challenge involving Alexis Mac Allister and Hamdi Fathy also triggered strong appeals from the Egyptian bench, but play continued without intervention.

Earlier in the match, Mostafa Zico had a goal ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up. Egyptian players and coaching staff believe these decisions significantly influenced the momentum of the contest and ultimately contributed to their elimination.

Hossam Hassan Launches Strong Criticism

Speaking after the match, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan did not hide his disappointment. He described the refereeing performance as "unfair" and questioned several decisions made throughout the game.

Hassan went even further by suggesting that the tournament appeared to favor defending champions Argentina, comments that are likely to attract attention from FIFA. During the match, the Egyptian coach had already been shown a yellow card after angrily protesting Argentina's late winning goal.

His emotional reaction reflected the frustration felt throughout the Egyptian camp after watching their promising position disappear.

Players Share the Sense of Injustice

Forward Mostafa Zico echoed his coach's frustration after the final whistle. Although he avoided directly attacking the officials, he admitted the squad felt several important decisions had gone against them.

For many Egyptian players, the turning point came after building a two-goal advantage. They believe the disputed officiating decisions helped Argentina regain momentum before completing one of the tournament's most dramatic comebacks.

Despite the disappointment, Egypt's performance against the reigning world champions earned widespread praise for its discipline, attacking intent, and resilience.

FIFA Yet to Respond as Debate Continues

At this stage, FIFA has not issued any official response to Egypt's accusations. Nevertheless, the controversy is expected to fuel further debate over VAR consistency and refereeing standards during the remainder of the World Cup.

While Argentina now move on to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals as they continue their title defense, Egypt leave the tournament with pride in their performance—but also with lingering questions about whether key officiating decisions altered their World Cup destiny.
