Chelsea Smash British Transfer Record with £117m Morgan Rogers Deal as Paul Merson Questions the Move

Chelsea are set to complete one of the biggest transfers in football history after agreeing a £117 million deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The England international is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional season, making him the most expensive British player ever.
The blockbuster move comes despite strong interest from Arsenal, who reportedly identified Rogers as their top attacking target this summer. However, Chelsea ultimately won the race for the 23-year-old, adding another major signing to their ambitious rebuild.

Paul Merson: "Chelsea didn't need Morgan Rogers"
While the transfer has generated huge excitement, former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson believes Chelsea have made an expensive mistake.
Writing in his latest Sky Sports column, Merson described the transfer fee as "crazy money" and questioned why Chelsea would invest so heavily in another attacking midfielder when they already possess one of the Premier League's best creators in Cole Palmer.
"It's a lot of money. Crazy money. Bringing Morgan Rogers in for £117m isn't what Chelsea needed," Merson said.
According to Merson, both Rogers and Palmer naturally operate as No. 10s, making it difficult to understand how manager Enzo Maresca plans to fit them into the same starting lineup.
Where does Cole Palmer fit?
Merson fears Chelsea could once again push Palmer out to the right wing to accommodate Rogers, something he believes wastes the England star's greatest strengths.
He also pointed out that new signing João Pedro is another player who prefers operating centrally, meaning Chelsea now possess three high-profile attacking midfielders competing for the same role.
"Where's Palmer going to be? Stuck out on the right again? He's wasted in that position," Merson explained.
The former England international also questioned whether Rogers' style is ideally suited to Chelsea. At Aston Villa, Rogers thrived in transition, driving into open space during fast counter-attacks. At Stamford Bridge, however, opponents often defend with deep blocks, leaving far less room to exploit.
The pressure of a £117m price tag

Merson believes the enormous transfer fee will inevitably increase expectations around Rogers.
While players often insist they cannot control the amount paid for them, Merson argued that supporters and the media will judge the England international based on his record-breaking valuation.
Unlike defensive midfielders such as Declan Rice or Moisés Caicedo, Rogers will be expected to consistently deliver goals and assists, making the pressure even greater.
"He'll be judged on scoring and creating goals. That's the hardest job in football," Merson said.
Arsenal forced to change plans
Chelsea's success in signing Rogers also represents a significant setback for Arsenal.
Merson believes Mikel Arteta's side must now turn their attention toward Paris Saint-Germain wingers Désiré Doué or Bradley Barcola, both of whom he considers capable of taking Arsenal to another level.
The Sky Sports pundit was also surprised by Arsenal's decision to sell Leandro Trossard, insisting the Belgian was one of the club's most reliable performers in important matches.
"I cannot believe they sold Leandro Trossard. I'm flabbergasted," Merson admitted.
Aston Villa face an uncertain future
Beyond Chelsea and Arsenal, Merson expressed concern about Aston Villa's direction after what had been one of the club's most successful seasons in decades.
Having qualified for the Champions League and lifted a European trophy, Villa have now lost two of their most influential players following the departure of Youri Tielemans and the impending exit of Rogers.
Merson described the pair as Villa's two most creative players and warned that supporters have every reason to be worried.
He also suggested that defender Ezri Konsa could become the next major departure, with both Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly monitoring his situation.
One of the biggest transfers in Premier League history
Whether Rogers becomes Chelsea's next superstar or another expensive gamble remains to be seen, but there is no doubt his arrival marks one of the defining transfers of the summer.
For Chelsea, it represents another bold statement of intent as they continue building a squad capable of challenging for major honours once again. For Aston Villa, replacing one of their brightest stars will be a difficult task, while Arsenal must now look elsewhere to strengthen their attack before the new Premier League season begins.
