Kostecki Sends Championship Warning with Sixth Win of the Season

Brodie Kostecki has reignited his 2026 Repco Supercars Championship campaign after producing a commanding victory in the final race of the NTI Townsville 500, reminding the field that the title race is far from over.

After missing the final race of the Darwin Triple Crown, the Dick Johnson Racing driver bounced back in emphatic fashion, securing his sixth win of the season and climbing back to third in the championship standings ahead of Cam Waters.

Crossing the finish line nearly 10 seconds clear of the competition, Kostecki delivered a simple but powerful message over team radio.

"That's how we come back."

A Brilliant Drive After an Early Setback

Starting from the front row, Kostecki briefly slipped to third after Ryan Wood produced a stunning move around the outside at Turn 2 while Cam Waters defended the lead.

Rather than panic, the reigning star patiently rebuilt his race. A perfectly executed strategy during the pit-stop cycle, combined with relentless pace throughout the middle stint, allowed him to leapfrog both Waters and Matt Payne.

Once in clean air, Kostecki controlled the race from the front, steadily increasing his advantage before cruising to an emphatic victory.

Celebration Almost Ends in Disaster

The only mistake Kostecki made came after the chequered flag.

Attempting a celebratory burnout, the Australian accidentally nudged the wall in a moment that instantly reminded fans of Will Davison's famous post-race celebration mishap in 2013.

Commentators were quick to spot the similarity.

Richard Craill joked that Kostecki had "done a Davison," while Garth Tander laughed that Davison would finally be relieved someone else had stolen his unwanted highlight.

Fortunately, the contact caused only minor cosmetic damage.

Laughing afterwards, Kostecki admitted he hoped nobody had noticed through the tyre smoke.

"I thought you guys couldn't see it through the smoke," he joked.

"There was no proof on the car, so nothing ever happened."

He also laughed that Will Davison could now stop hearing about his own famous crash because "now it's my turn."

Early Chaos Shakes Up the Race

Before the battle at the front settled down, the opening lap produced one of the busiest incidents of the weekend.

Aaron Cameron was spun in the midfield after contact, while Andre Heimgartner suffered terminal damage after being collected. Macauley Jones, Reuben Goodall and several others were also caught in the incident, forcing an immediate Safety Car deployment before the first lap had even been completed.

James Golding later became another victim after Cooper Murray made contact under Safety Car conditions, earning Murray a 15-second penalty.

Matt Payne Extends Championship Lead

Although victory belonged to Kostecki, Matt Payne quietly strengthened his position in the championship race.

The Grove Racing driver finished second after another composed performance, extending his overall points advantage heading into the final stages of the season.

Cam Waters recovered from pole position to secure third place after surviving a tense fuel-saving finish, narrowly holding off late pressure while Chaz Mostert generously moved aside in the closing laps.

Ryan Wood impressed once again with fifth place after another aggressive opening stint, while Broc Feeney, Kai Allen, Will Brown, Jack Le Brocq and Jayden Ojeda completed the top ten.

Championship Fight Heating Up

Kostecki's return to form dramatically tightens the championship picture.

His sixth victory of the season moves him back into third overall and keeps his title hopes firmly alive with only a handful of rounds remaining.

Meanwhile, Payne continues to lead the standings through remarkable consistency rather than outright dominance, setting up what promises to be a fascinating championship battle over the final events of the 2026 campaign.

The next stop for the Supercars Championship is the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440, taking place from July 31 to August 2, where the title contenders will once again battle for crucial championship points.
