Big Bash Makes History: First-Ever Overseas Match Confirmed in India

The Big Bash League is set to make history this summer, with Cricket Australia confirming that the opening match of the 2026-27 season will be played in Chennai, India — the first overseas fixture in the competition's history.

The Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will face off at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, marking a landmark moment for Australian domestic cricket.

The historic announcement was made jointly by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the broader 'G'day Namaste' initiative aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.

The match will begin after day four of the first Australia-New Zealand Test in Perth and is expected to attract a massive television audience across both countries. Broadcast live by Foxtel and Kayo Sports in Australia, as well as JioStar in India, it is tipped to become the most-watched game in Australian domestic sporting history.

Cricket Australia believes Chennai is the ideal venue, with the city already renowned for its passionate cricket supporters. Although December falls near the end of the region's monsoon season, officials are exploring contingency plans to minimise any weather-related disruptions.

Several BBL clubs expressed interest in participating in the historic fixture, but the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers were ultimately selected after Cricket Australia considered scheduling, travel logistics and commercial factors.

While officials currently describe the Chennai match as a one-off event, Cricket Australia has not ruled out making overseas season openers a regular feature in the future, provided discussions with the BCCI and both governments remain positive.

The initiative could also pave the way for even closer collaboration between Australian and Indian cricket, with Cricket Australia indicating it would be open to hosting an Indian Premier League match on Australian soil if the opportunity arises.

The historic Chennai opener represents a bold new chapter for the Big Bash League as it looks to expand its global reach and connect with millions of cricket fans beyond Australia.
